Dine close to the stars

Since its opening almost half a century ago, Grillið, "The Grill", has consistently been viewed as one of Iceland's top restaurants when it comes to fine dining. The dining room was originally named "Star Hall" and is located atop the Radisson SAS Hotel Saga, where foreign Heads of State often stay when they visit Iceland.

The guests sit on stately chairs with ruby-red plush cover, giving everyone their personal space. The two largest decorative elements of Grillið are the stunning views over Reykjavik and the Faxaflói Bay and the high ceiling where the twelve star signs are wrought in bronze by skilled artisans. However, the true stars turn out to be the guests, as the multiple award winning chefs take them for an enchanting trip across the constellation of French modern-classic cuisine.

Among the starters, grilled langoustine medallions, the King crab and the foie gras trio were a special delight. Of the aesthetically presented main dishes, turbot with olive purée, the stuffed rack of lamb as well as the tenderloin of venison were delicious, but the desserts turned out to be true fireworks, especially the pistachio ice-cake, the chocolate fondue and the tonka pepper creme brulée -flambé?.
Wines to accommodate the meal were well chosen and explained by the head waiter, who is a four-times Icelandic Sommelier of the Year. Expect prices that are a notch above the average, and tidy clothes are recommended.
